His birth was an accident, his Mother was afraid that there would be evil associated with the pre-mature birth, so she cast her son into the Ocean. Maui was saved by his ancestor, the Sun. The Sun took him to his kingdom and Maui remained there through adolescence while he received a devine education. Upon returning to Earth to seek out his mother, he decided to live among mankind.
