    Setting: Nubia 750 BCE – 400 CE
The Merotitic Kingdom was first centered in Napata until approx. 650 BCE where it was known as the Kingdom of Kush. Shortly after, the capital was moved to Meroe - a city out of Roman military reach but not Roman commercial reach. Meroe was near a key iron ore deposit and along with gold and ivory was one of the kingdoms major exports. Meroe also imported luxury goods from Arabia via the Red Sea. By 500 BCE, Meroe was a city of mud-brick houses that surrounded a massive royal complex. The complex was made up of royal temples and cemeteries of pyramid tombs. As stated previously, Meroe was out of the Roman military sphere but not the Roman commercial sphere. A major piece of evidence is the bronze head of Augustus [27-25 BCE] that was found at Meroe. Indeed, Roman influence reached deep down the Nile River.
