A dark, hulking shape watches from the darker shadows of the forest at the tableau unfolding by the water. Eyes reflect the pale moonlight and a low growl rumbles as the young woman takes the hand of the harlequin. Soft snuffles probe the slight breeze, identifying the scents. Then the shape fades back into the darkness.
I stretch in the hazy moonlight. As my muscles expand and contract, I ponder the sights I have seen this night and the knowledge I gained roaming the land as the Great Bear. Evil is still present in Drakesheath, fortified by the dark allies of the Ancient Enemy of Old. Still, a Light even more ancient than the Enemy shines in the darkness, offering hope. It is my duty to feed the Light until the Darkness is banished forever.
The night brings news. The Lord Drakesheath and his beautiful cousin are on the threshold of danger. Artemis, mystery embroiled in mystery, disappears from the physical world and enters another realm. The strange doctor Scylding, too, seems to have vanished from sight. New presences are in Drakesheath: some for the Light; some for the Dark. Among the bright specks I sense some old souls, friends from ages past, drawn once again to battle the Evil that ever plagues the world. Another dark force is come to Drakesheath, also. It hunts its prey in the village.
I have been away long enough. It is time to enter the field and begin anew the age-old battle. I throw back my head. A thunderous roar echoes through the night.
