You don't want to disrupt your household while trying to do the right thing and care for the pooch. He might be just as unhappy in his new situation as you are.
Finding another home for him is certainly a viable option. Check with any social groups you belong too - church, work, little league, whatever, and let people know you have a pooch who needs a good home. And, contrary to what many people believe, not all animal shelters are bad places (I'm a volunteer for a great shelter) so that is an option as well. Also check with your local Lab Rescue if you have one.
