First, thank you for stepping up to do the right thing. There was no reason for that dog be treated like that!
Second, realize that it will take time for you both to adjust. Cocoa's been through a lot, too. It will take time for Cocoa to settle down and feel really secure and fall in love with you. It will also take time for you to learn to be a good dog owner.
At two years old, Cocoa is still really a puppy. On the outside the dog might look mature, but Cocoa is a teenager. The brain isn't completely up to speed yet! And you may experience some teenager attitude--although nothing close to the Spoiled American Teen!
May I suggest that you read up on dog training and dog behavior? Or take a dog obedience course? Even watching "The Dog Whisperer" on the National Geographic channel is beneficial (if you have it!). Dogs need a different approach than cats, and understanding them goes a long way to having a happy relationship together.
