    The Romans were more interested in regulating prostitution, not eradicating it, in spite of their general contempt for women who became prostitutes. They adopted the idea of state-controlled brothels, or lupinar (house of she-wolves) but it wasn't until the time of the Emperor Augustus that a set of codes governed the behavior, restrictions and privileges of prostitutes. They were forbidden to cover their faces in public, forbidden to wear the color purple, to wear shoes or to put their hair in fillets. They were also required to dye their hair red or yellow. ...

    Hermes couldn't believe his eyes. Arrius Flavius back in Pompeii! He wondered if the man had heard about Sextus reopening Green Acres or if it was just coincidence. Either way he was shocked. He had never thought to see Arrius again. Then the wheels started to turn in his head. Was there a connection between Arrius and Verrius? Maybe they were lovers? That would have been too fantastic to be true and Hermes dismissed the thought as foolish. What should he do? Should he stay here and see if either of the men emerge from the brothel or should he fly home to tell Sextus what he observed? He didn't have to think very long. Within minutes both men came back outside, deep in conversation. So they did know each other! Hermes decided that his mission was complete and should go home to tell his master everything. Just at that very moment for some unknown reason Arrius suddenly looked over his shoulder and saw Hermes. For an instant their eyes locked. Hermes immediately fled away, not looking back.
