A cry of alarm is sounded through the village. As I jump from my bed near the hearth grabbing my spear and shield, a warrior enters my hall.
"Cean fine! A Cumhaill messenger approaches! He carries an urgent message to you from Morrigu ni Brian! The outer guards have sped him on his way with fresh horses for his chariot.
I rush out to the courtyard, my wife running behind me. I exit in time to see the chariot approach and a tired messenger disembark.
"A chara na Chumaill!" he says.
"A chara!" I answer.
"Aoife, bring this man food and drink!" I bark to a nearby servant. She scuffles off to fulfill my request.
"What is it man, that brings you to my hearth at this hour?" I ask him when he has regained his breath.
"My lord, A vile deed this night has occured! The wife of your ally Eoghain Cumhaill lies dead upon her bed this night! Your daughter was killed by Eoghain's concubine!" he says.
"What? You cannot be serious man!" I shout in disbelief.
"Aye mho chara!" he answers my doubt. "Morrigu daughter of your old friend Brian calls on you this night to bring Eoghain and this wench to justice, for she knows that Eoghain laid with this woman against his oath!"
My wife collapses from the news, tears and sobs overwhelming her frail form. Her servants try to console her, but she has gone mad with grief.
"Angus, prepare the chariots and a raiding party. If these words are true, then Cumhaill blood will atone for this honor price!"
