Japanese name: Akechi Tama or Tamako
Hosokawa Tama was the third daughter of Akechi Mitsuhide. In 1578 she was married to Hosokawa Tadaoki, eldest son of the daimyo Hosokawa Yusai. Yusai. When Akechi Mitsuhide rose against Oda Nobunaga in the Honnoji Incident of 1582, Tadaoki refused to assist his father-in-law, and Tama was obliged to retire to Mitono in the Okutango Peninsula.
She converted to Christianity in 1587 and received the Christian name Gracia (Garasha).
In the war that followed the death of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, her husband sided with Tokugawa Ieyasu. When Tokugawa's rival Ishida Mitsunari attempted to take her hostage, she ordered the family retainer Ogasawara Shosai to kill her; he and the rest of household then committed seppuku. Their sacrifice led to the Hosokawa family joining the war on Tokugawa's side.
In Nagasaki, there is a portrait of Gracia in the Peace Museum. her life of sacrifice and endurance in maintaining her faith was rewarded when the Vatican made her a saint in 1862.
