    He lived from 467 to 534, and was said to be the first king of Wessex. Cerdic lived during the time that Britain was being taken over by the Saxons. He landed in Hampshire in 495 and in 519 won a great battle at Charford. This victory marked the beginning of Anglo-Saxon England. He was defeated at the battle of Badon Hill, and was succeeded by his son Cynric and grandson Ceawlin.
