...they were often allowed to form families, with any resulting children becoming chattels of the owner, and could therefore be sold on separately. A bit late in the day or empire, the Law Code of Theodosius in 439 legislated that such families could not be legally broken up, indeed it was retrospective stipulating that if you had already split up such a slave family you should recover them and place under a single owner. Bet that could be fun!
