I'm not an expert on sound in webpages, but I believe you need to tell the browser not only what file to play and what the controls should look like, but what file type it is and what plugin to use. I use this code and my sound works in all four major browsers: MSIE, Netscape, Firefox and Opera. Of course, you have to be sure your browser has the plugin. But if you don't have the right one, I believe this code even tells you what plugin you're missing. (At least I seem to remember it told me that....)
The only thing I haven't been able to accomplish with this code is to get it to loop in Firefox. But I'm still working on that. You can test the functionality by going to Andrzej Cherusci's homepage
