    Ves heil!

Atalanta I have to agree, chain might be fairly easy to get off. Of course, whether or not one can swim in chainmail all depends on whether it is a hauberk, byrnie, or just a mail shirt. I have made and worn mail shirts that were light enough I could have swam short distances in, and I am a rotten swimmer. Swimming in a hauberk though... no way unless you are Superman (or Beowulf perhaps). 40 to 50 lbs distributed over a person's body like that, and my guess is you would sink like a rock. The Viking Answer Lady has a good article on arms and armour btw.

    Far heil!
