I place my food offerings and mementoes on the table and fill a trencher with succulent roast beef, tender salmon, cheese, fruit, nuts and a slice of Mac's barm brack, then sit quietly and receive the blessings and predictions of my ancestors.
A chill wind stirs the leaves, reminding me the season of the Cailleach is upon us. Soon She will bring her staff down full force upon the earth and usher in Winter. It is She who opens the Western gate for those who have departed to travel into Summerland. She is also the great mother and the wise old woman who lives in the hills. I leave a special token of herbs and nuts on the table for Her and depart as quietly as I came.
