Were you a man of noble parts
You would know how to win my heart
You would not make such bold advance,
But follow my lead in Love’s slow dance.
You wonder why I take amiss
Your heartfelt pleas that we should kiss ?
You moan, you sigh, you call me cruel,
And yet refuse to play Love’s fool.
Think you that rubies I adore ?
I think my virtue worth far more,
Offer the riches of the East
I’ll not be won by such a beast.
Woo me with words of constancy
( as for your bribes, please let them be )
Take not amiss, when I refuse
Or words of scorn and anger use
Follow me only with your eyes
Then mayhap, I will think you wise
Expect no token, nor no kiss
Expect from me no more than this
An age of waiting patiently,
Perhaps for all eternity
Until you sow, you shall not reap,
For other love, I deem too cheap.
