When I first read Mist's years ago, I was struck by how closely and detailed her look into the Old Religion was. Factually she was very accurate, and for those parts of which there are no written accounts her portrayal had a stunning amount of insight for someone whom (at the time of my reading, was Christian).
(Please don't take that as degrading her point of view, on the contrary, I would find it astounding that someone who was not Islamic, to be able to bring through the power and feel of that religion in writing - as an example-).
I wasn't until shortly before her death, that I found out why her insight was so poignant. During the writing of many of her books, Marion's religion was not Christianity it was Paganism. In fact for most of her life, she embraced her own traditions in paganism. It was not until the end of her life, that she converted to Christianity. It almost seems an echo of Mists. I think she closely identified with Morgaine, in many ways. She was a powerfully written character.
I had found that information, on what was her official site. I always like to back up anything I say, however the site itself now seems to be gone. Unless it was moved, I can only think they removed it sometime after her death. I had obtained that information on a FAQ page, of questions about her personal religion. :) I guess I wasn't the only one wondering.
Just a little insight into the woman, that I thought I would share.
