    The War Kit

    It goes over the wargear of the average Anglo-Saxon: namely, the characteristic seax, the spear made from the ash tree, the round shield, and the rounded leather cap, often strengthened with iron bands. If you were a professional warrior, not just a farmer (who had need to fight often enough), you likely also had a long sword, a heavy mailshirt of iron rings, and a full-fledged helm with nose and cheek guards. (See, for example, my avatar; it is a picture of the Anglo-Saxon helmet discovered at the burial site at Sutton Hoo in 1938.)
