    Yes, its true. Early Roman law forbade women to drink wine, the preferred beverage, except on set festival days. The penalty for women drinking wine was death, as Plutarch, Cicero, and many others attest. The historian Varro reported that Egnatius Mecennius beat his wife to death with a cudgel for drinking wine, and Romulus acquitted him.
