Especially those things that produce and produce and produce....and then can them.
It's not so hard, really, and you'll have tomato sauce for an army, tomatoes, carrots, zucchini, cukes.... the list goes on. I make a ton of pickles these days, and plenty of wine from the abundant free blackberries and blackberries that grow in every patch of ignored land.
So at least that produce, I'm fairly sure, is ok. And it tastes better.

I really appreciate the info on organic produce, though, as this is what I buy most of the time when I don't have it on hand;-)

This year, I'm growing a promising heirloom tomato strain called "Bloody Butcher." If you can find it, It's supposed to have a superlative taste as well as being ready in 55 days!

Another neat one for those with lots of exposure is a blue corn variety called "Black Aztec Sweet corn" from the Seeds of Change co. It produces regular size corn-250 kernels per cob, the package says, which are milk white when fresh but darken to blue-black when dried. Also supposed to be very sweet and tasty. Cool, huh?

Gardeners, check out the online heritage seed catalogs online, of which there are many. It's not too late! Heritage seeds are the way to go, when flavour and vigor was valued over appearance. And yet there's so many colours in the old plants! I'm growing purple(Purple Calabash) and black(Black Russian) tomatoes this year too- can't wait to see how they turn out.
