The city of Carthage was something very impressive to see. Immense temples, wide colonnaded plazas graced with statues and colorful pennons waving in the wind from spires on many government buildings. Betinas was waiting as Onions ran up to her from the city's main gate. She gave Onions a hug and then promptly gave her a skin filled with wine and a small satchel filled with fresh fruit and bread. Then Betinas took the torch from Onions and waved a fond farewell to her friend before she began to run through the city, toward the east.
As Betinas ran out of the city and into the desert, dodging snakes and scorpions became a commonplace occurrence. At times though, she had to skip around so many such obstacles that it looked as though she was doing a dance instead of a run. She ran with the burning torch in one hand and with a spear in the other. It was used to jab any unwelcome vermin out of the way as she ran. After a long while running in the hot desert sun, she was covered in sweat and fervently began to wish that the mirages shimmering in the sandy distance were real.
All of a sudden however, Betinas thought she saw the sun god Ra coming down out of the sky. She stumbled in shock and fell over a rock, breaking her leg in the fall.
'Now what?' thought Betinas. 'I may eventually die of exposure and thirst and the hyenas will eat me for lunch.'
All she could do to stave off that fate was pray, and pray hard. Since it was Ra she thought she had seen, Betinas took a gamble and prayed to him, hoping he would have mercy on her and send help.
