I've been pondering this and I had to look for an appropriate place to put it.
Why are men always studs and women sluts? That is, throughout most of recorded history, promiscuity and lust in men are (at least privately) applauded while derided in women?
I think the answer lies partly in the way men and women approach sexual desire. Also throughout recorded history, we find men are intimidated by the level of women's passions- the consistency of them, anyways. While men burn hot and then burn out, women keep going and going and going. Most of the restrictions put on women such as hiding the head, hair and face, confinement to the house except while supervised, etc. is in response to these seemingly endless passions.
Did you know the area that engorges with blood (in women it's a larger organ than men!) drains completely after orgasm with men, but with women it re-engorges immediately? Women are built for multiple orgasms.
So, when a man is potent with many women, and/or many times in the day
he acheives a superior status. Only natural, it happens in most herds or packs of animals too. When a woman does the same, she is only fulfilling a task she is ideally suited for.
Sluts and Studs is an idea to help maintain balance between the sexes. Women, being bottomless wells of desire require restraint, men, being limited in power, should strive to the utmost to keep up.
The chinese had it right with the concept of yin and yang- The woman is filled with endless yin, while the man has a limited supply of yang. Therefore, in sexual congress he should make her orgasm many times before climaxing himself to maintain the balance.
Men are programmed to spread their seed around, women, to select the best genetic material of what's available. Promiscuity is actually the best breeding tactic for both. However, once it became obvious that men were directly responsible for the parentage fo the child, it also became important to subdue the woman's activities to be certain of that paternity. Obviously, though, adultery is built into our genes. Men who suspect their parters of cheating ejaculate 'killer sperm', which attacks and destroys rival sperm. They also ejaculate more cc's. Women can time their orgasms unconciously to favour one or the other lover's seed.
I also wonder if the concept of stud and slut evolved after the advent of literacy. If you recall, I said in recorded history....that is not to say that attitudes did not change right about when we started writing things down. I was reading a book called 'the Goddess and the Alphabet', and the author connects clearly the rise of literacy combined with the turning from mainly female deities to mainly male. A fundamental shift in thinking at the same time solid evidence of literacy arises could shroud what we first thought of promiscuity....
Any thoughts?
