    Just been glancing idly through the Provisions of the Quinisextum Synod (as one does), called by the Byzantine Emperor Justinian II in 691. I see that Canon 50 provided that playing at dice was punishable by excommunication, even for laymen.

    This Synod had lots of other good ideas , not directly relevant to this group. However, I thought you might also like to note Canon 79 that forbade Christmas presents, and Canon 96 that threatened the ban of the Church on all who "curled their hair in a provocative or seductive manner."
