The Imperial Villa was built at the end of the first century B.C. in the area beneath the terrace of the Temple of Venus and against the city walls near the Marina Gate. I left the House of the Mosaic Columns early, before anyone else was awake, allowing me to arrive at Hadrian’s villa in good time.

“I am glad we arranged to meet this morning, Achillas. There has been a development,” Hadrian begins. “Damon is here in Pompeii. He stopped by the villa last evening while I was at Etruscilla’s. I do not know what the man wants, but it would be best to be alert to any possibilities that may arise.”

“Agreed. What do you plan to do?” I ask.

He tells me of his plan to await Damon’s return today. He cancelled his outing with the ladies which is a good idea considering the circumstances.

“I want you to return and quietly inform the rest of the household help to be on alert. Do not tell them why. We don’t need this reaching Etruscilla’s and Varilla’s ears just yet. As soon as I am done meeting with Damon, I will let you know where things stand.”

“That sounds reasonable. I shall be on my way then.”

I take my leave, making sure to stop by the marketplace on the way back to Lady Etruscilla’s.
