Thanks Kaz for the link about the possible excavations in Afghanistan. I never thought that Buddhism spread that far west.
What never stops to amaze me is how man, through the ages and regardless of culture and believe, always have a knack to destroy things he/she considers alien. The conduct of the Taliban in Afgahanistan is not unique. I could never understand why people destroy things that represents something from the past and with (at least) some historic value. One thing I have learned from my cursory study of history is that history can not be altered or changed.
On a cosmic level: Once you open the door to violence you also let in forces you can not control. The Talibanin in their ignorance did not only destroy the Buddha images, but also ultimately themselves. People will sometimes never learn the truth about unwarranted violence and destruction.
Question: As far as I know no war was ever fought nor any destruction perpetrated in the name of the Buddha. Is this correct or is the inforemation I received incorrect?
