The Ui Maine appears brazenly as I'm about to ride through the gate. Her boast, her challenge to me, would be cause to confront her about her perceived place, but not at this time. This is not how a member of the Fianna would behave toward their brothers. What did she learn in the Fian Samildanach? Though I know little of their current Rig Fennedh I knew Nyfain Cumhaill to be full of honor as well as wit.
"As a brother in arms you are always welcome to ride instead of run," I say to her as I turn my mare to confront her. "However the gelding was not given to Amlaidh, only the use of him. He still belongs to me and there was no confusion about it. I had planned to give him to Amlaidh as a sign of my respect before the fighting season, but that time had not yet come and obviously will not now."
Her stare is unwavering, and while I admire her bravery I cannot allow her to believe she is right.
"You would also do well to mind that the property is not your right to claim," I continue. "Unless there are ties of family you've not yet announced, all property is distributed by the Rian. As the codes state, Do not force yourself on a chief. As the Rian is also your rigfennedh you may possibly shame her twice."
I turn my horse and ride to catch up with Dobhar, but not before saying over my shoulder that should she need a reminder of the codes she should meet me by the fire this night.
