While it is a little late for the period, back on Ancient Sites I used an image from the Bayeaux Tapestry for my avatar. As I said, it may be a bit late for our time frame, but it seems to me that the Anglo-Saxons and Normans of that period didn't look too different from Germanic peoples of slightly earlier periods!
