The Landmark Thucydides literally looms from my bookshelf in a rather intimidating way. I've heard it's one of those great achievements in scholarship that cannot be 'dated.'

One question about Spartan tactics. What, if anything, of Sparta's way of fighting war was adopted by any other Greek city? Did Sparta leave a fighting legacy in how the Greeks fought, a typical "set-piece" battle? And if so, why were the Macedonians so easily able to pierce the lines, outflank them, outdraw them and then surround them, which is my impression of Charonaea?
