I forgot to add... this rite is old and mainly in disuse. Every time the hammer was tapped against the forehead the priest who had done the last rites (normally not the tapper) would ask "Are you dead?/Sei morto? every time the hammer touched/tapped the forhead. The tapper would wait for 3 seconds and then re-tap the hammer, and then the question was asked etc etc...
