There are speculations that this cloth is actually the Shroud of Turin. Some claim that this cloth, which bore the imprint of Christ, was brought to King Abgar V, Ruler of Edessa, by Thaddeus Jude, one of Christ's disciples. There it remained for centuries, hidden away until the 6th century, when builders repairing a city wall found it inside the crumbling structure.
The cloth was taken by Emperor Romanus I in 944 to Constantinople, and disappeared from history by the early 13th century.
What is also interesting is that a diptych was painted in the 10th century depicting King Abgar holding the cloth, with the image of Christ clearly upon it.
The plot thickens! *S*
