Not only was it a hereditary kingdom, but it was one of the crowns that the Hapsburgs would end up claiming.
In fact, as I understand it, it is one of the four crowns that the Holy Roman Emporer needed to be Emporer. They are, Bohemia, Burgundy, King of the Germans, and King of the Italians(I think).
Not only was this a desired crown, but would spark many conflicts, most notable in the west is that of the 30 years war.
