4.00 pm - Entering the Rhine - The 'Phoenix' will be met at the Rhine delta by a squadron of Roman ships sent by the legatus Augusti pro praetore of the province of Germania, P. Quintilius Varus. Varus will join the ship's company with several of his staff and the senior commanders of his five legions. The small fleet will then sail up the river, accompanied by long-boats rowed by warriors of the delta tribes, the Batavii and the Chamavi.

Event: Refreshments, including local wines and cheeses, will be served at the Captain's Table, with P. Quintilius Varus as our esteemed guest. Governor Varus will be pleased to detail his experiences in Syria and north Africa or explain how he has successfully pacified the formerly warlike tribes of Germania, to wide acclaim.
