    It should not be suprising that the Germans thought so highly of images that would promote fertility and foodstuff as almost all cultures did that.

    The slavs had a Moist Mother Earth, the Romans and Greeks Juno/Hera and so on.

    Much of this would be transplanted onto the Virgin Mary, but not all of it. Even until the late 1800s Russians still held ceremonies to the Moist Mother Earth and celebrated her in art.
    When the USSR was born, her image would be used to promote nationalism and the image of Russia as a great producer of grain.
