    Of course, but Tolkien based it on Norse mythology... his strong Catholic Christian background also gave it a lot of Christology in very subtle ways: Frodo's "via dolorosa" to Mt. Doom to destroy the evil ring, Gandalf's Resurrection and transfiguration after destroying the Balrog (ancient demon), the establishment of the benevolent king to rule the world of men (Aragorn)...
