Waes thu hal!
Well, here are my thoughts in the matter. I suspect Arthur actually existed and that he was one of the Celtic leaders against the Saxon, Angle, and Jutish invaders during the 5th and/or 6th centuries. From this leader, Arthur, grew the myth. Like most myths it would have changed over time, picking up various influences from various sources. I suspect that once the Arthurian myth became well known among the English, that it is quite possible that the memories of Alfred, a Saxon king who fought the Danes, influencd the myth of Arthur, A Celtic king who fought the Saxons. After all, in both the cases of Arthur and Alfred, one has a king or war leader (whatever title the man upon whom the Arthur myth was based) who was struggling to save his country from foreign invaders.
