Viking shields up until the 11th century were, in fact, almost universally round. The true "kite" shield was an invention of the Normans (who were, by proxy anyway, vikings).

All archaeological evidence from viking settlements in Norway, Sweden, Denmark, France, Great Britain, Iceland, Asia, and Greenland points to round shields until the end of the tenth century.

Pick up any serious work on viking archaeology, and you'll see.
