I got curious, after reading over the responses, and decided to search more deeply into this issue. I came up with something rather interesting. It's a book, and I think it can be ordered into your local library. Here are it's particulars:

The God of ecstasy : sex roles and the madness of Dionysos by Arthur Evans. New York : St. Martin's Press, 1987.
    Paganism
    History
    Psychology
    The Maenads
    Advanced
Scholarly discussion of the impact of an ecstatic, gender-bending religion on a rigidly sex-roled society.

It might help shed some light on the Maenads/Bacchantes actions during their celebrations, ecstacies, etc.
