The New York Times ran an interesting and detailed article in its Tuesday, April 20 edition on efforts to find the remains of five Persian fleets that were lost during the Persian Wars: "Off Greece, a Risky Hunt for the Lost Fleets of Legend." These "lost fleets" are (1) the fleet destroyed by storms while rounding the cape of Mount Athos in 493/92; (2) the ships lost off the coast of Magnesia while sailing south towards the Greek position off Artemisium in 480 B.C.; (3) the ships lost during the battle of the Capes of Artemisum in 480 B.C.; (4) the ships lost in the "hollows" of Euboea in 480 B.C. while sailing south to attack Athens prior to Salamis; and (5) the ships lost in the battle of Salamis itself. Somewhat surprisingly, given the relative shallowness and accessibility of the waters off Salamis, the recovery effort that has made the most progress appears to be the one off of Mount Athos. If you can find the original paper, it has nice plans of triremes and a handsome artist's sketch of one. This being the Times, the link above will probably function only for a short time, after which you may have to order the article or seek it on LEXIS.
