Anthesteria, a spring fesival of Dionysus, represented a memorable turning-point in the lives of young children. It was based around the broaching of the new wine, and the whole community drank together. This included, for the first time, three-year olds. Each recived a little jug. Such jugs have been found in the graves of infants who died to young to participate in their first Anthesteria.
