ALthough I wouldn't call it crappola, Tiamo. I thought the art direction in the film was incredible. The opening scene where Jesus and his followers were in the forest was terrific. Probably the best footage of the movie, but unfortunately, the rest of the film followed the artistic direction of this first scene, and I hate to say it, as you have a Braveheart avatar, but the characters were cartoonish.
One, the Roman soldiers getting wasted on wine and totally beligerant was a bit much. I seriously doubt that with the sort of discipline the Romans endured that they would take part in this sort of frolicing. They may have, but the Roman soldiers who crucified him were drunk the entire time. It was like they were enjoying the whole thing, and I don't care how evil or drunk a person is, no one will enjoy doing that much damage to a person. They acted like drunk high school jocks getting ready to rape a girl. The same sort of formula could be followed for both.
Another thing, Jewish men weren't allowed to grow beards until they were married, yet Mel portrayed Jesus as having a beard. I am wondering if he was infering something against Catholic tradition with Mary magdeline, or was it just an oversight? I wonder about that.
Final thing. Nailing Jesus to the Cross. They pulled his arm out of the socket to make his arm match the hole. Roman craftmanship would never make such an oversight. It looked to me to be the causation of pain for shock value, much like the death scene of William Wallace in Braveheart. There is nothing creepier than watching a guys elbow coming out of the socket.
Then there was the raven. I wanted to get out of the theatre and see something calmer, so I went to see "Night of the Living Dead" and that was pretty cool.
