    What does a technical writer do? Imagine taking a character (your user), and having to explain a story (the procedures, concepts, hardware/software) without ever mentioning the character directly.     In July 2000, the general consensus at the Tech Comm 2000 conference seemed to be that technical writing would be phased out and automated. The general push there was for people to learn more about other fields (Web-related skills were a hot ticket at the time) and move away from technical writing because it was considered a dying profession.

    Does anyone agree or disagree with this assessment?
