I will add more later.
I am not even going to get into your cancer statement. You just don't know me well enough to go there.
The Passion can wait for it's own thread as well. Then I can launch into my problems with his improper uses of certain Aramaic words, his Latin pronunciation, the portrayal of the Romans, Barabas and the Pharisees and a bunch of other production issues.
I find your answer to my question about 'true' Christians to be one that skirts around the issue. It seems to me that everyone claims Christians are fine until they organize into churches. The Catholic Church sanctioned torture and murder, the Anglican Church sanctioned the oppression... where does it end?
Let us remember that the Catholic Church helped Nazi's escape after WWII. And yes, predominantly Christian nations fought against Hitler. However, they did not do it for the sake of the Jews, and others, in the Holocaust. In fact, it is well established that those same nations were aware of the camps for years and did nothing. Further, those nations, including America, turned away a boatload of Jewish Refugees. Nation after nation after nation until they were forced to return to Germany and were slaughtered.
The Allied nations fought against Lebensraum. And in fact, were willing to allow Germany to take over several countries before they decided to get involved.
I certainly will not discount the loss of Christians in the Holocaust and have never discounted the loss of 5 million lives other than Jews; Romany, Christian, homosexual, trade unionists, etc.
I also would never discount the actions of your father and his entire generation that sacrificed like no other modern generation of man. I honored them in my own way by following in their footsteps and have spilled blood as a result. My family was inside the concentration camps and we remember the liberations. Most of them did not make it out, however.
As for Schindler, I have researched this man. More than just watching the movie. What he did turned out to be good for many people that he saved, but his actions still allowed the German war machine to keep moving along. He was a profiteer who developed a conscience. Certainly, the Tenbooms, and so many others who hid Jews are and should be amongst the blessed of our nation.
I would debate that, technically, the first Christian blood, that of Jesus, was drawn by the Romans.
Now, as for the founding of Israel, I will put the thanks to people like my uncles, who fought alongside Menachem Begin. David Ben-Gurion declared independence for Israel despite decades of British duplicity and double-dealing, not because of their assistance but because their mandate expired.
Your statement about Christianity being the most followed faith in the world is erroneous. It is certainly amongst the largest, but not THE largest. And for that matter, it glosses over the fact that Christianity first had to bastardize itself to spread and then forced conversion for centuries in pogroms and crusades.
You are also twisting my words. I said Jesus barely deserves a footnote in Jewish history and I stand by that. I have previously admitted and continue to admit that Christianity has had a major affect on Judaism over the centuries. Injustice, murder, torture, etc. When Christians could not find others to kill, they invented the idea of the righteous war so they could kill each other.
Ok, here is my point in a nutshell: I am all for dialogue between Christians and Jews, but first Christians must acknowledge their past. No one is willing to take responsibility for 1500 years of killing and hate. It is always laid on "false" Christians and people who are not true-believers. Yet, these people always seem to be those that are in charge of Christianity during their time. WHEN WILL SOMEONE TAKE RESPONSIBILITY AND ADMIT THAT CHRISTIANITY HAS A VERY IGNOMINEOUS PAST? I'm not even looking for an apology, just an admission of fault.
Can you not see why most Jews just won't take Christians proclaiming love and peace towards us at face value anymore? Honestly, there is very little basis for trust. Just stop and think about it for a while before you reply.
Now, to answer your lineage response, it doesn't work. Yes, Jews very much accept adoption, but maintain heredity. I will give you an example: If a man who is a Cohain (hereditary priest) adopts a male child as his son, that son is not automatically conveyed the heredity of the Cohanim. If the child was born a Levi or a Yisroel, that lineage is maintained. If the Cohain has no genetic sons of his own, his line of Cohanim dies with him.
Hence, Jesus cannot take that part of Joseph's lineage as his own and is not recognized as being from the lineage of David.
Something else that deserves its own forum is views on the afterlife. Jews do not believe in heaven or hell. When Yehudit stated, "A righteous gentile is far closer to God than a non-righteous Jew." righteousness is not defined by the belief that it will ensure you a place in heaven. Righteousness is also not defined as walking perfectly in His sight. Yes, the commandments need to be obeyed, but righteousness is judged as much by his actions with others. The Christian "Golden Rule" is taken from Jewish thought and belief. Pride is not always a sin in the Jewish view. Prideful arrogance is.
Ok, that is enough for now. You get a two-day break from me. I have performances in Texas this weekend, where I, quite ironically, portray a Catholic. Should have been there when I played a Nazi. ;-)
