As Acol was talking about the 'Snake Woman' yesterday, itīs fitting to bring the mythological background in here by looking at the goddess Cihuacoatl as the next deity, donīt you think:
The name Cihuacoatl means 'Feathered Woman'. According to legend, Cihuacoatl bore the first two humans - a man and a woman. She did this together with Quetzalcoatl after the Birth of the Fifth Sun. So she was a creator goddess. She was also identified as Coaticue which means Serpent Skirt' and Tonantzin; 'Our Mother' and some identifies her with as Toci and Teteo Innan (weīll come back to these later).
The shrine of the Virgin of Guadalupe stands on the ancient ground sacred to Tonantzin, perhaps the Spanish priests were anxious to remold her into something more suitable for their purposes?
There was a hymn to her which goes like this:
...plumed with eagle feathers,
with the crest of eagles,
painted with serpents blood
with a broom in her hands...
goddess of drum beating...
She is our mother, a goddess of war,
our mother a goddess of war,
an example and a companion
from the home of our ancestors...
She comes forth,
she appears when war is waged,
she protects us in war
that we shall not be destroyed...
She comes adorned in the ancient manner
with the eagle crest.
