Thanks for the link, Tetisheri! Iīm going to try and post right on this board for these gods, as itīs nice to have access to some direct info. Please donīt let that stop anyone from digging up links and posting etc!
Quetzalcoatl is the god called the Feathered Serpent. He is also the 'First Lord of the Toltecs' so he goes a bit back. Mythically he is the "Precious Twin" and each morning he lifts the sun out of the nightly darkness so that the day can appear. He is also the god of winds and breath of life, wind and breath often go together in contexts such as these.
But that is not all, Quetzalcoatl is also the one who gives the Law, he brings civilisation to humans and he creates the calender.
In the palace at Teotihuacan a frieze depicts him coming into the world in the form of a chrysalis. From this one he struggles and comes out a butterfly, which was their symbol of perfection.
So it seems he was a very benign god at the bottom. But perhaps just because of this, there were all kinds of demons tempting him constantly to fall to murdering and making human sacrifice. And as he was the most benign of all the Aztec gods, he understood that he had committed sins when falling for the demons and to atone for these he threw himself on the funeral pyre. Being such a loving character he did not succumb to the flames but his ashes rose to the skies instead. In the form of a flock of birds they carried his heart to the star Venus.
Thereīs a whole lot of nice aspects conected with Quetzalcoatl and as he only demands one single human sacrifice per year, I guess you could say heīs quite special. Despite this, he is often considered synonomous with HUITZILOPOTCHLI.
