As I was wading through Warren Treadgold´s A History of the Byzantine State and Society I was quite shocked and intrigued by his identifications of the Ravenna Mosaic. Here´s a link to a bad article on it with some bad photos (the best I could find). The Mosaic is illustrated on p. 202-203 of the book with a note to a upcoming article on it.

Basically he identifies the two men in Justinian´s left as Anastasius grandson of Theodora, and Belisarius. Further the two on his right side are John the nephew of Vitalian and archbishop Maximian. John is said to have been added later (quite clear, I think) and that Maximian was substituted for his predecessor Victor. In the other scene we have Theodora and Belisarius´ wife Antonina, and daughter Joannina.

Threadgold´s theory about this commemorating the bethrothal of Anastasius to Joannina is quite plausible. In this light the later "adjustments" carried by John (who else?) seem very... well, jeaulous.

    Intriguing.
