The cover article for the June, 2000 issue is titled "Indus, clues to an ancient civilization". On page 116, it says, Also significant are things not found: No remains of great temples such as Mesopotamia's or sumptuous tombs such as ushered Egypt's pharaohs to the next world. In other words, no evidence of an overwhelming king-ship or theocracy. "Rather, what we see in Harappa is an elaborate middle-class society," Meadow said. The archeologists wonder if Harappa even had an army. Although a few weapons have been unearthed, no carved pieces depict war scenes like those in the sculpture and texts of Egypt and Mesopotamia. They seem to have been mostly craftsmen and traders. In fact, one of the items which seem to have been treasured the most was a Barbie-doll. They found several intricately carved stone dolls imported from Bactria/Margiana with interchangeable carved wigs (carved fine enough for strands of hair to be apparent). I believe I wrote a few posts about the Indus and Bactria/Margiana civilizations on the Babylon board. I'll go look for them.
