Although agriculture seems to have come late to India, arriving sometime around 5000 BC, India was one of the first regions to give birth to civilization. Only a few centuries after the first Mesopotamian cities sprang up, a people living along the northern reaches of the Indus River discovered urbanization, metalwork, and writing. It is a mysterious civilization and one with no discernible continuity, for it thrived for just several centuries and then disappeared. The Indo-European immigrants who settled the region did not adopt most of the aspects of this civilization, and what precisely they did adopt is difficult to ascertain. So while Egypt, Mesopotamia, and the Yellow River civilizations lasted for millenia and left their mark on all subsequent cultures, the Indus River civilization seems to have been a false start. ...

Some links I've found in my searches and research into this region:

Slideshow with some good Mohenjo-daro info

ahmedabadcity info on Lothal(Indus city) not comprehensive but good

    Harrapan and Indus language byte

    India's earliest art - from Mohenjo-daro

Very interesting article about the possible myth of Aryan invasion when it may be credit due to Indus instead

Also, in my searches I found an interesting article discussing the as yet undeciphered Indus script, and apparantly there are many hucksters out there purporting to have figured it out and generally embellishing the Indus valley civ. I have not found much in the way of trade documented between the Indus Valley and other neighborhing civilizations, though I know them to have traded with Dilmun (here in Bahrain), Egypt, Mesopotamian etc.

For those wondering about the use of the word Harappan if they are more familiar with Indus or visa versa: "The Harappan Civilization is known also as the Indus or the Indus Valley Civilization. The Harappan script is known also as the Indus script. So 'Harappan' and 'Indus' are interchangeable. The inhabitants of this civilization are called Harappans." -excellent linguistic and script source for Indus
