Devadasi is a religious practice in parts of southern India, whereby parents marry a daughter to a deity or a temple. Devadasis are young girls 'given' by their parents to the temple to devote their lives to its care. In reality such girls (especially in more modern times) became prostitutes for upper-caste community members. This religious practice was banned in 1988, but the law is not being enforced in all parts of India.
