The "Raven banner" is much clearer on a larger resolution and with a better image: my CD of the Tapestry shows it quite well; but even so, it only appears to be a raven, it isn't definite. The reason why is the banner is at an angle. But most scholars (not all) consider that the other theories about the banner are weak: that it cannot be the papal banner with a "chalice" stitched on it, because such a banner would never be held "couched"; that it is some sort of "dagged" weapon seems the silliest explanation of all. It closely resembles known, circular-shaped viking warflags; and the design in the center of this one looks like a bird with its feet closest to the viewer. If you look closely (I wish the picture on my webpage was better tho) the beak of the bird is to the right, and the body is in full profile. It very closely resembles other profile views of birds on the Bayeux Tapestry.
