Kelly eased herself to the ground with a sigh, leaning back against the smooth bark of the birch tree, grateful for its shade. The weather was unseasonably hot. The breeze blowing past her face could have given her hair dryer stiff competition. Idly she wondered how long it would take to dry her hair in the wind, and how on earth could she style it with such an unpredictable airstream? Then she laughed at herself and rooted through her bookbag. Might as well get her journal entry taken care of now, so she didn't have to worry about it later.
Her notebook was cool against her fingers as she pulled it out, but it quickly warmed. Truly, this was promising to be a bad summer... only April, and already it was hot enough that she'd kill for an ice cream. What was going to happen come July? Or, god forbid, August? Ick.
Kelly fished out her pencil, which had worked its way to the bottom of her bookbag. It was one of those mechanical pencils, the kind art students preferred, with a little rubber grip and a metal clip which was currently hooked securely into her dorm key. Kelly sighed again, and patiently worked the pencil free. One of these days she was going to have to get a purse, start keeping things like keys and makeup and change separate from her books.
