Traditionally, the Celts did not necessarily aim for a moral lesson with their stories. In fact, Celtic heroes were actually pretty shallow. It's after Norman influence when the Celtic tales exhibit more developed concepts of romance and virtue. One wonders how much different the Mabinogion would read if there were a written version extant from pre-Norman Wales.
