The first things that one feels compelled to mention here is a delineation between the Tuatha De Danaans and the Fair Folk who are also known as Sidhe. True that the Danaans became the Rulers of the realm of Fae after they left the mortal realms; but native denizens of the realm they were not.
In her book Elemental Power, Professor Wolfe theorises that the Danaans were "chosen" for this particular role as they were an advanced branch of man who had somehow crossed the bridge between the mundane and the otherworldly. As such, and with their preparatory period in this mortal realm; the Fair Folk thought them most suitable successors to all that was theirs when the time came to return to the Otherworld.
It is curious to note in that self same book Professor Wolfe theorises that as the Danaans came out of the West to Ireland that perhaps they are a lost scion of Atlantis (given the current theories that Atlantis stood somewhere between Europe and the Americas). She quoted a line from an ancient source (although I shall have to go back and reread the book to properly refence the quote) to the affect that the Danaans settled in Ireland as it was the first suitable land that they came across.
Certainly it is food for thought even though it does not hold we of the Fair Folk in good stead. Indeed it seems that not only did we loose our hold on the land; but also become subserviant to these "princes" in the Otherworld as well. I guess it is true that often times the true of matters is distorted by the fierce pride of the seemingly victorious race.
